Sri Lanka needs a meritocratic and proportional election system to bring any hope. 8th Oct 2023

Sri Lanka is at a crossroads. Although we can identify and blame many institutions and individuals for our downfall, the fundamental root cause is ‘our corrupt election system’ that has been tinkered with so many times to ensure the opposition is weak. As a result, our democracy is broken. We need to work together to change our election system before the next general election to be hopeful that Sri Lanka will be able to recover from its current misery. If we do not commit now, we will likely be on a slippery path to being another ‘Somalia’ with another parliament that is not interested in serving the people. Please remember that Singapore, Sri Lanka and Somalia were on an equal footing when we got independence. The proposed election system here is an outline which can be scrutinised and finetuned by the experts. The model proposed is for our youngsters to understand that there is an alternative that can help us recover with hope for a better future. We must inform the public, big and small at all levels, that this is possible.
