Thanks, Ram. Good account. We need facts to make sound decisions and apply better logic. Here are some other facts you should consider:
Proportional representation is better than the first-past-the-post system.
So why did things go wrong in 1978? The Constitution was manipulated with bonus seats, national seats, and party leaders selecting candidates.
Why did we continue down this path? People didn’t speak up and lost interest in politics. As a result, politicians took advantage, removing all checks and balances through the 22 amendments.
With no checks and balances and the politicisation of public service institutions, ministers and others began approving projects for personal gain. Corruption increased, and mega white elephant projects were approved with corrupt deals, leaving the people in debt.
As Ram mentioned, we need the Senate back to provide checks to maintain ethics in the legislature.
Democracy has two key aspects: 1. Voting and 2. Nomination. Both processes should be regional, not national. We need a regional nomination system, even for presidential candidates (like in the US). It is this regional representing that makes the democracy work.
